This rarer, gem-quality variety of the mineral beryl was first discovered in 1910 on an island near the coast of Madagascar. Crystals ranging from light pink to rose are also known as pink beryl, rose beryl and even pink emerald. Morganite is believed to nurture feelings of love and to increase tenderness in a relationship. It brings healing, compassion, assurance, promise, can enhance communications skills and provide patience to help focus during times of stress.

Named after legendary financier J.P. Morgan, for his gemological and mineral contributions to the American Museum of Natural History in New York, USA. Morgan was also an avid customer and collector for Tiffany’s, where much of the Morganite was sold at the time.

Morganite may be the least-known of the beryl family, and its relative newness and rarity make it a unique, sought-after, beautiful jewelry stone. The color can range from a soft pink, to peach, to violet-pink and is commonly heat-treated to remove any unwanted yellow tones and to produce the more desired pure pink color.

Morganite is rated at 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale of hardness and is a durable stone ideal for all jewelry purposes.
